What benefits are allowed to undocumented aliens and immigrants?
As of today undocumented aliens are not eligible for public assistance programs, some undocumented aliens do commit fraud to obtain these benefits. On the other hand legal immigrants are eligible for some benefits, under certain circumstances, although there usually is a waiting period before they can recieve any benefits.
Also, undocumented aliens are not eligible for welfare, food stamps or other public programs, they can get some of these by using false identification papers.
Moreover, services like walk-in clinics usually do not ask for ID at all, so anyone can easily make-up a name and social security number to get treated. Hospitals, even if they suspect or know someone is an illegal alien will not turn them away, and will not report them. Everyone must be treated for serious medical conditions. Even if public services did report undocumented aliens, the USCIS only has so many resources and can only deport a small fraction of all deportable aliens, and they will always go after those who are commiting more serious crimes first.
Before, 1996 all legal immigrants were eligible for Medicaid, welfare and food stanps. In 1996 a law was passed to increase the waiting period much longer to obtain these services. An example of this is a family sponsor of a new immigrant has to submit an affidavit of support, showing proof of thier income and also to promise to support the immigrant up to 10 years. This also includes that the sponsor will pay back the government any monies payed out to any public agencies that the immigrant used. Over time even this law has been relaxed to include some benefits under certain circumstances, but many immigration advocates feel there is much work still to be done over this matter.
