Victories

DREAM Act may be dead.

Wednesday the House passed the DREAM Act bill to give hundreds of thousands of children that were brought into the country by their parents who were undocumented a chance at legal status. It appears to be a shallow win though as it looks like it may have a slim chance to pass in the Senate. The House passed the Dream Act bill by a vote of 216-198. Immigration advocates and Hispanic/Latino activists were hoping to get this legislation passed as a no-brainer to the start of wider comprehensive immigration reform bill. There are an estimated 12 million undocumented immigrants in the United States currently. Of those it is estimated that only around 2 million would be able to be to benefit from this bill. Politicians that are anti-immigrant are pushing hard to kill this bill, calling it amnesty and that it would promote others to come to this country. Yes in just a mere 15 to 20 years, if not longer they would become citizens... some incentive. Today the Senate is thought to put a similar DREAM Act bill to a vote. It is not looking good right now that the Democrats will get the 60 votes it needs to keep this bill alive beyond the Republican oppostion. What is really sad is that over 36 Democrats voted against the DREAM Act with eight Republicans backing it.
