Maybe not so fast about Killing CIR in 2010
Recent poll numbers show that over 80% of U.S. citizens think undocumented immigrants is a serious problem, and over 50% of voters say it should be a high importance for Congress to tackle. Over 65% of voters approves of comprehensive immigration reform (CIR) as a package, and over 80% think that unauthorized immigrants should register and work their way to become United States citizens. When polled if the country would be better served if unauthorized immigrants were made to go back to their home country to create jobs or for undocumented immigrants to remain and became legal citizens, close to 70% supported legalization and for them to pay taxes while only nearly 30% supportedfor them to leave the country to create jobs. For those paying attention, the real politics of immigration reform was showing during the recent Brown victory party. Mitt Romney was given a notable speaking role and spent a conciderable amount of time playing to the television audience. As you may recall in 2008, Mr. Romney was an zealous adversary of compehensive immigration reform (CIR). He believed he could use this matter to win support with extreme conservatives in the Republican party to defeat Sen. John McCain. Needless to say it failed miserably. In a 2009 interview, he now feels that one way to intice more Latino's to the Republican party is by pass CIR before the next election. It is also interesting that another possible Republican Presidental candiadte in 2012, Sarah Palin, also seems to be pro-immigration. Republican Meg Whitman who is in the California gubernatorial primary as pro-immigrant and pro-reform. The current poll numbers shows her leading the in the Republican race. It would appear that the GOP canidates with their sights on the future are starting to realize that they can not survive by losing the Latino voters. As a matter of fact, smart Republican insiders now understand that the only chance that a GOP Presidential nominee has to be competitive in 2012 is to regain the Latino-heavy states that Obama won from Bush--Florida, Nevada, New Mexico, and Colorado. To accomplish this, they have to win at least Forty percent of the Latino vote. In 2004, Bush won Forty to Forty-four percent of the Latino vote, and an estimated Forty-eight percent of the Latino immigrant vote. In comparison J ohn McCain in 2008 only won Thirty-one percent of the Latino vote, and only Twenty-five percent of the Latino immigrant vote.
