Immigration fees likely to increase.

The federal government is looking to increase fees of the initial step to becoming an American citizen. This process involves getting a green card which might have its fee increasing. To get full citizenship the amount of the fee is not likely to increase. The Obama administration has asked for a price hike to the application fee for a green card that are given to immigrants who are allowed to reside and be employeed in America permanently. The increase would be from $930 to $985 and the price required for fingerprinting would also increase from $5 to $85, for a total of $1,070. Immigrants looking to become an American citizen must have had a green card for 5 years before they can be eligible to apply for citizenship which costs $595 in addition to the fingerprinting cost. Other cases involving where an immigrant wants to marry an American citizen, the amount of time would not be as prolonged. The Obama administration is not asking for a fee hike for the citizenship application fee although a study conducted by the government revealed the price should be raised at least $60 an application. This is said the amount of money needed to cover the full price to process the applications. Ali Mayorkas, director of Citizenship and Immigration Services commented that the increase in fees (if approved) would only make up some of the gap in revenue losses. He went on to report that his agency is looking at a $2.3 billion in estimated costs but only a $2.1 billion in revenue this year.
