Democrats and GOP positioning for 2012 race.
With their eye on the future the Democrats are looking at the DREAM Act bill as a test for GOP legislators on the issue of immigration reform for the start of the 2012 election. With the dust now settling from the recent midterm election, all the data shows that the Hispanic and Latino voters came out in droves to support Democrats when historically this community does not come out and vote for the midterms. Senator Harry Reid (D) in Nevada is living proof of that. He defeated his Republican opponent Sharron Angle after she had been leading in every poll until she showed her bigoted views by airing political ads that portrayed Hispanics as thugs and illegals. But it is still uncertain if there are enough Republicans to back any immigration reform bill that goes past just stricter enforcement. In fact, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano recently received a letter from all 7 Republican members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, asking for a ballpark figure on the price tag to the American people to deport every undocumented immigrant in the United States. And with the GOP gaining a House majority in January, Republicans who are moving into lead positions are taking a harder stance on immigration. For example Rep. Steve King (R- Iowa), who will probably be the next chairman of the House Judiciary Subcommittee, is tickled pink that 14 states have started bills to stop automatic American citizenship to children of undocumented immigrants who are born on United States soil. King believes that the founding fathers got it all wrong when it comes to the 14th Amendment. Although some upstanding Republicans have backed a more reserved stance on comprehensive immigration reform it now appears the looney's have temporarily taken over the asylum.
