Feds sue Arizona College.

The federal government in a show that they are not playing around when it comes to immigration practices, has sued one Phoenix community college. The lawsuit alleges discriminating against non-citizens in the community college system. The applicants were allegedly asked to show additional documentation before they could be employed. The DOJ filed a suit against the Maricopa County Community College District earlier this week. This is the DOJ's second lawsuit in less than two months when they filed a lawsuit to Arizona's controversial new immigration law going after undocumented immigrants. The DOJ is also looking at proable civil-rights violations by Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who takes pride in calling himself “America’s toughest sheriff.” This current suit is the result of a DOJ investigation that lasted over a year. DOJ officials allege there is a pattern or practice of discrimination by the community college system. During a year and a half period there were almost 250 non-citizen job applicants that were made to present green cards and other work-eligibility paperwork that goes past what is required by federal law. Thomas E. Perez, the assistant attorney general who is in charge of the the Civil Rights Division, commented that the Immigration and Nationality Act’s clearly states that it is unlawful to treat authorized workers differently during the hiring process based on their citizenship status. The DOJ is requesting that the community college system pay a penalty of a little over $1,000 in the suit for each of the 247 non-citizen job applicants who were made to provide extra paperwork.
