Victories

Utah Lawmakers hearing a different tune from Arizona's immigration law.

Over a handful of Utah officials came back from an information gathering session in Arizona earlier this week. What they found was rather startling to them, that a controversial immigration law would probably do harm to Utah's economy. As you already probably know Arizona's controversial immigration law which allows law enforcement to detain anyone they suspect of being undocumented if they have some reasonable suspicion. This is being looked at in other states to see if it would be reasonable in their states. As the law keeps getting scrutinized by independent sources the flaws just keep rearing up their ugly heads. The entriage from Utah, which included Lt. Gov. Greg Bell among other lawmakers spent a couple of days sorting out all the information they could gather. They talked to everyone from Arizona lawmakers, business groups, police officals, border patrol, the Hispanic community and even attorneys for the state. One of the big messages coming out of all the meeting was from the business groups being dramtically hurt by this law. Especially in these economic times Utah could not handle taking a hit in our tourism and convention business which would really hurt the states revenue, Bell commented. He went on to say we really have to weigh all the factors before moving forward on any immigration bill.
