Who's getting the last laugh on immigration laws?

In a word... lawyers. Lawyers who help write these bills cost citites and communities who have hired them, millions of dollars while these laws have typically been struck down as unconstitutional. Groups such as FAIR (Federation for American Immigration Reform) and IRLI (Immigration Reform Law Institute) have helped draft bills like the one in Arizona. Even State Senator Russell Pearce has been reported in the press of his home State of Arizona of allegedly dealing with racist people and sending anti-Semitic emails. These laws have been overturned in the past because they are unconstitutional and they preempt federal law, just like the federal court determined in July against Arizona. Not to mention that other little issue of encouraging racial profiling by making police officiers to ask for documentation from anyone who appears to be an immigrant. These lawsuits drain the states of huge amounts of money in attorney fees and economic losses. How you might ask economic losses? Just ask Arizona businesses... to the tune of millions and millions of dollars in lost tourism already for starters from cities boycotting Arizona. One small Arizona county on the border determined it would cost their county almost 25 million dollars to enforce the new immigration law while they would lose around 12% of law enforcement officers detracted away from their normal duties. They also determined they would need to house another nearly 700 prison beds. In the long run these laws are found unconstitutional and the lawyers who help write these bills just keep laughing all the way to the bank.
