Over 12,000 Haitians apply for TPS so far.

The number of Haitians that have applied for Temporary protected status (TPS) in hopes to stay in the United States and be able to hold a job leglly is now over 12,000 after their devasting earhtquake. The amount of people applying have been streaming in, well before the July 20 application deadline. Bill Wright a spokesperson the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and is a department of the Homeland Security Department. The ability to work is all many have in hopes to be able to give some finanical support back to family memebers back in Haiti. Because of the magnitude-7 earthquake it is still not safe to send back the undocumented immigrants to Haiti. Temporary protected status has been granted by the DHS and if an applicant is forunate to stay in the country and work for 18 months without having to worry about being deported or being places in a detention center.
