Victories

Sharpton critiques Martinez.

Many may not know or even care about a visit from the Reverend Al Sharpton who visited New Mexico last week to speak at the state legislature with Governor Susana Martinez in attendance while the state’s budget crisis was being discussed. Sharpton who is probably one of the most recognized civil rights advocate in the United States. He announced that every American citizen should have been well-pleased to see Martinez become the first Latina governor in United States history. Sharpton, went on to say that Martinez’s important victory demonstrates huge progress. But, Sharpton, a Democrat, went on to say that Martinez has to remember her past and how she got to where she is today and now even more so while she tries to figure out ways to cut the budget deficit. Sharpton went on to say that he did not come to bash Martinez but hopefully remind her who helped get her elected and not to forget them when she has to make cuts. Sharpton and Martinez are on opposite sides of the immigration debate as well as her position on benefits for state workers. But, Sharpton also went on to say that without the minorities of the Latinos, African Americans and women, Martinez would not be governor right now. Sharpton spoke to hundreds at the University of New Mexico and also at the state legislature.
