Demonstration against Nebraska immigration legislation.

Around 500 people of all faiths and nationalities demonstrated at the State Capitol in Lincoln yesterday opposing a Nebraska legislation bill that is being tried to get pushed through as an Arizona-style immigration law. Some of the speakers at the demonstration included officials from the Methodist and Catholic churches. They spoke out against the controversial Arizona immigration law that they believe is expensive in terms of legal defense fees, and that it promotes racial profiling and causes a rift through out the immigrant communities with law enforcement. Many speakers spoke out saying Nebraskans, are better than this. And Rev. David Lux, who is the pastor of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Lincoln read a statement from the state bishop saying “We embrace all people as members of the family of God”. The demonstrators also handed over 6,000 postcards to Nebraska state senators contesting the Legislative Bill 48. This bill wants to permit police officers to be able to check anyone's immigration status that they detained for any reason. The architect of the legislation is State Senator Charlie Janssen of Fremont. He denounced this protest calling it a  “pro-illegal immigration rally”. He went on to say that that these types of groups today have no positive input to real solutions to our broken immigration system. Really? Well, I don't think trying to pass bogus legislation is the answer either to our immigration dilemma either.
