Victories

Another States Immigration Law being Fought.

Recently a number of immigrants in Alabama began a lawsuit yesterday in the Montgomery County Circuit Court. They are disputing the controversial Alabama immigration law HB 56 which they claim violates Alabama's state constitution. HB 56 was put into law just last month with the signing of the Bill. This new law broadens the scoop of restrictions on undocumented immigrants by permitting police agencies to hold anyone for "reasonable suspicion" because they are believed to be undocumented. Also, this law imposes on employers that they are required to check the immigration status of possible employees. The plantiffs named on the lawsuit consist of Mexican immigrants, undocumented immigrants and another person who's spouse is an undocumented immigrant. This lawsuit should not be mistaken from an earlier lawsuit that was started in the beginning of this month. That lawsuit was filed in federal court by a number of Pro-immigration groups which is being led by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) because of state violations.
