Racial Profiling at Albuquerque CIS Office.

With the recent onslaught of new harsh immigration laws that some states have tried to get passed, which I might add none have been completely passed by the federal courts, these laws only promote racism and racial profiling. And while the main reason why these laws are unconstitutional is because the federal government has supreme control of all immigration matters. Other important reasons these laws are unconstitutional is because they are racist and promote an atmosphere for racial profiling. This is where our story begins: Last week a paralegal at our law office went to the local CIS (Custom and Immigration Services) office to conduct some routine business. Our paralegal went up to information window when our number was called. Our paralegal identified herself. The officer then asked "What are you?" to which are paralegal answered "I am an employee of Kretz & Romero". The officer who just smirked back and asked "NO, are you resident or citizen"? The officer then asked to see our paralegals green card papers which every resident should carry with them. Our employee did not have them at the time. This is just another real life example of what these types of immigration laws promote, racism and racial profiling. This CIS officer had no just cause to ask our employee their immigration status except for the fact that our employee is of Hispanic decent. We have filed an official complaint with our local CIS office and are waiting a response back. We will continue to pursue this matter and continue to escalate it to higher authority until we get a satisfactory outcome to this inappropriate behavior.
