NM House to determine fate on License Bill today.

With some true political maneuvering yesterday in the State House over immigrant drivers licenses, it is still unclear how it will all pan out. Although House Republicans and I may add a few Democrats gave some hope for Governor Susana Martinez's (R) campaign promises of stopping the state of issuing driver licenses to undocumented immigrants. The bill which is called House Bill 78, is set for a vote today on its fate. Yesterday a similar bill was introduced in a Senate committee but it was rejected and it appears a fight is brewing in the chamber today. Immigration advocate groups have chimed in on this issue as well saying it has nothing to do with driver licenses, it is just political maneuvering. Martinez praised House members who stood with her to repeal this "dangerous" law as she put it. House Democrats are asking what issue they are really trying to fix here, and that the amount of undocumented immigrants with licenses are minimal. Yesterday many were allow to speak before the committee pleading not to repeal the law, some of them were Santa Fe's Mayor and a spokesperson for the state's Roman Catholic church.
