Department Of Homeland Security Puts Out Guidance On Prioritizing Deportations.

Yesterday, Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) told every ICE lawyer to start a systematic review of immigration cases to look at if pursuing deportation is warranted in each case and if it is consistent with the Administration’s enforcement priorities. This directive comes after last summer’s announcement that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will review 300,000 immigration cases to see if they meet the enforcement priorities and halt those cases which do not. ICE has also issued more detailed guidance to the ICE lawyers in regards to requirements for determining when it is pertinent to use prosecutorial discretion to close or dismiss a case. These measures are so very important so we can change the atmosphere of immigration enforcement within its own department and to better allocate its resources with its enforcement priorities. This will also help ICE lawyers to take into account the peoples personal situations in every case when determining if it is appropriate to pursue removal.
