Texas Hospital Backs Down On Paralyzed Undocumented Immigrant.

A spokesperson for the family of an undocumented immigrant who was paralyzed from an accident on the job says that hospital officials have backed off trying to send him back to Mexico because he is has no way to pay his hospital bill. Back in August, Francisco Martinez fell off of a roof and broke his neck at a shrimp packing business in Galveston. Martinez was transported to the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He was given life-saving treatment but unfortunately he is still paralyzed from the chest down. Doctors believe there is a 99% chance he will never walk again. Right now Martinez has very limited use of his arms and hands. Just a few weeks after Martinez's accident a social worker told the family he would need to be move because they could not pay his bill. The hospital did issue a statement saying that they only have the obligation under law the to give emergency treatment and stabilize a patient. The Mexican Consulate in Houston, told the Martinez family that the Mexican government is prepared to help taking him back to Mexico and provide him health care, but the family does not want him to go back to Mexico because he can not receive the proper care he needs there.
