Salt Lakes SB144 Would Crack Down On Immigration Consultants

Salt Lake city is looking to add much needed legislation to stop predatory practices of "immigration consultants" who are ripping off unsuspecting refugees and immigrants of thousands of dollars. There is also a huge need for a federal mandate for every state as well to help stop this deceitful practice of immigration consultants. In Salt Lake city Senator Luz Robles (D) is introducing a bill called SB144 which would make immigration consultants who are not lawyers to register with the state Division of Consumer Protection. They would also have to get criminal background checks and post bonds. The bill, also has a provision in place where people can file a complaint if someone is defrauded. Robles commented that her office gets around 3 phone calls a week from people who have been deceived by "immigration consultants" that promised to help them by either filling forms out or answering questions. Another big issue that some immigrants face is the term "notary publics", this is very confusing to people from Latin American countries, where a notario publico is a highly trained lawyer. In the United States a notary public can only witness the signing of legal documents. Many "immigration consultants" use this misunderstanding of the terms to take advantage of unsuspecting immigrants.
