Florida Lawmaker Introducing Similar DREAM Act Bill

This past weekend had a rather strange duo in the form of a high school valedictorian and a Florida lawmaker teaming up together. Republican Rep. David Rivera, (FL), announced he was going to introduce a draft for a comprehensive immigration reform bill that would allow some undocumented immigrants a path away to citizenship. In attendance were Daniela and Dayana Pelaez who are sisters and they were accompanied by the Florida congressman, at the North Miami Senior High School this past Saturday to introduce the bill that is being drafted as the "Studying Towards Adjusted Residency Status" (STARS) Act should be filed within the next couple of weeks. This bill would permit undocumented immigrants that had come to the United States before the age of 16, the chance to adjust their residency status if they receive a diploma from an accredited four-year of college or university while also meeting other criteria. The STARS Act is very similar to the DREAM Act legislation which was proposed by the Democrats nearly a decade ago. We will have to keep a close eye on this and see if this legislation gets passed or not.
