The Wall Street Journal is asking "What's Up"? Lou Dobbs the recently fired anchor for CNN, is franticly trying to fix his image with the Hisipanic and Latino communities. It appears Mr. Dobbs has his eyes on a potential bid for a Senate seat in New Jersey. In an interview with Telemundo, Dobbs commented numerous times for a plan for the over 12 million illegal immigrants that reside and work in the U.S. Mr Dobbs stated that there should be a way to legalize illegal immigrants under certain parameters. It should be noted that this issue was common rhetoric against legalizing illegal immigrants calling it "shamnasty". For years Mr. Dobbs exploited his CNN show to sterotype Hispanic and Latino immigrants as outlaws, intruders and disease ridden. He also used his show in 2007 to drum up resistance against Comprehensive Immigration Reform. The bill that would have brought into law to make over 12 million illegal immigrants strive to become citizens. After the failure of President Bush to get CIR passed he said it was "a glorious victory for the American people." Needles to say Mr. Dobbs is well know for his misinformation and trepidation about Hispanics and Latino immigrants.

| Changes in the works for immigration bill. |

Democrats in the House of Representatives are making changes to their immigration legislation taking into account the nation’s high unemployment rate. These actions are taken because of the jobless rate at 10.2%. These numbers are forecasted to stay the same or even possibly rise into much of 2010. This has a changed the political climate for immigration legislation. Every bill that is before the legislature is reflective of the time it is proposed. With unemployment in double figures their needs to be verbiage that is very carefully worded in the legislation. Most pro immigration reform activists realize that in these difficult economic times make it all that much tougher for immigration reform legislation. Time will tell to see if the up swing takes less time for the economic up swing to happen to help this legislation being introduced and passed.

| Happy Thanksgiving! |

Thanksgiving is probably the single greatest American holiday of all the holidays. For the first thing, it was first celebrated over 100 years before the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Thanksgiving is truly a holiday all about family reunion, remembering a past community harvest meal enjoyed by the original inhabitants of North America and the very new influx of people "immigrants" from England. Thanksgiving is truly a celebration of the first immigration on the North American continent. With thoughts on families, Thanksgiving is a very appropriate time to reflect on the future of today's immigrants, whose reunion is vulnerable by federal regulations and enforcement policies that tear families apart and still fall short to accomplish the stated goals of our nation's immigration law. Very few Americans can comprehend just how dysfunctional our immigration system is when it comes to family reunification. The majority who are mad with number of illegal immigrants in the US think that there is a well ordered process by which people seeking a life in America could enter the country, if only this were the case, but nothing could be further from the real truth. We can only hope and prey that Obama's administration will continue to work on Comprehensive Immigration Reform while protecting our borders and keeping terrorist at bay.

| Findings: The process of immigration is becoming harder. |

A lot of the Untied States immigration undocumented aliens dilemma comes from the governments inability to fix its broken immigration policy. This can result in immigrants waiting up to seventeen years or longer in some instances for immigrants wanting to become U.S. citizens. This was one of many findings by the Multicultural Coalition of Grand Island at the public library, that examined the U.S. immigration process. Many of the same findings kept ringing out that a lot of the United States illegal immigration issues are from bureaucratic delays that hinders people looking to gain legal status in the U.S. These delays can rip families apart as families toil to legally be connected with their love ones. Some immigrants choose to come into the U.S. illegally rather than wait many years to be reunited with their families. Another big problem is that immigrants fight to put food on their tables and with the cost of immigrating to the U.S. on the rise, many just can not afford to apply.

| Obama does some damage control |

In a recent White house meeting with over one hundred CIR (Comprehensive Immigration Reform) backers, President Obama message was that he would still push for CIR even while the health care issue debates continues in the Senate. Many pro immigration advocates were up in arms about Mr. Obama's comments in Mexico about immigration reform would have to wait until after the health care debate was settled. Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is planning on holding hearings and introducing an immigration bill later this year. The President has no set schedule for immigration reform but it appears he wants to work on both health care reform and immigration reform together and will not back off of either.

| USCIS to audit 1,000 more businesses |

USCIS officials said recently they will be enlarging the program for auditing businesses that may have hired illegal immigrants. The USCIS has notified 1,000 businesses this week that they would have to take part in such an audit. An official for USCIS announced the new initiative, saying it was part of the administration’s plan to deal with companies that hire illegal workers. The USCIS is determined to seeking out and punishing employers who think they can unjustly get ahead by using illegal workers.

| Immigration attorney pleaded guilty to scam. |

The U.S. Attorney's office annouced that Sai Hyun Lee of Duluth filed false papers to help 17 undocumented aliens secure legal immigration stautus in federal court recently. Ms. Lee pleaded to a count of filing false documents with the U.S. department of labor. She could be sentenced up to ten years in prison and the maxium fine she could recieve is $250,000. Ms. Lee's sentencing is scheduled for Feburary 18, 2010.
Ms. Lee has agreed to turn over all the $100,000 that she had charged the 17 undocumented alien workers. Inspector general, Daniel Petrole for the DOL (Department of Labor) said that the evidence revealed that Ms. Lee was personally gaining income by deceiving the U.S. government. Allegedly, Ms. Lee charged an undocumented alien $25,000 to change their name on an approved labor certificate that was already given to an employer of another foreign worker. She then tried to apply for legal status for the undocumented alien using that certificate and doing the samething with 16 other undocumented aliens.

| USCIS consider fee increases/layoffs |

In light of major losses in income the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services may increase fees as a last resort. The director of USCIS, Alejandro Mayorkas reported in an interview recently that a huge drop-off in revenue this past year and poor outlooks for 2010 may force the increase. In 2007 fees were raised significantly which fueled criticism by immigration advocates saying the prices might make immigration impossible for some immigrants. The USCIS receives the majority of its income from fees paid by immigrants and the fiscal year of 2009 came up with a deficit of over $160 million after a huge decline in applications. Another possible measure is laying off USCIS employees as a last resort measure as well. In a recent speech Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano spoke about seeking a legalization program in 2010 for the over 10 million illegal immigrants estimated in the U.S., which would greatly increase USCIS workload.

| Secretary Janet Napolitano's First Speech on Immigration Reform |

Last weeks speech from Secretary Janet Napolitano was a clear sign on the Obama's administration to move forward with Comprehensive Immigration Reform. Ms. Napolitano spoke in great detail about all the steps in added security and enforcement to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). She also said "the more work we do, the more it becomes clear that the laws themselves need to be reformed." The Secretary pointed out measures that her agency has done to lay to rest the concerns from Congress and the general public about having secure borders. Some of these measures are the end of a year long backlog for background checks for immigrants looking to receive green cards, a new interactive website for immigrants to get information regarding their immigration status via email or text and increased the window of opportunity for widows of a deceased spouse to gain a legal status. Ms. Napolitano also finished her speech saying that the American citizens have to have confidence that the system works and that the American government is dedicated to securing the borders and crimes related to immigration. This is a very good sign that the Obama's administration understands the need and importance to Comprehensive Immigration Reform.

| Thoughts about Lous Dobbs leaving CNN |

After the recent announcement of Lou Dobbs leaving CNN you have to wonder what it is all about? Did the pro immigration community apply enough pressure on CNN to force him out? Maybe Dobbs is looking at a possible position at Fox News? Maybe his health is failing? Whatever the reason, Dobbs is a man of many contradictions. While he rants and raves about undocumented aliens it is ironic that his wife and daughters are of hispanic decent. Even more ironic is his daughters are horse riders and compete competitively. This sport has many illegal aliens throughout its ranks. Maybe in his mind it is "do as I say not as I do". One thing is probably certain though, we have not seen the last of Mr. Dobbs but time will tell. We can only hope that his kind of bigotry and hatered towards fellow human beings will eventually die out.

| Immigration Presentation at the University of New Mexico |

Mary Ann Romero, an immigration attorney and partner with Kretz & Romero, P.C., will providing current immigration information to students, faculty, and staff at the University of New Mexico. Ms. Romero will be covering nonimmigrant visas such as H1B, TN, J and O visas. She will also be discussing legal permanent residence eligibility as aliens of extraordinary ability, outstanding researchers, national interest waivers and labor certification. The presentation will be held on Thursday, November 12th at 2:30 PM at the LAII, located at 801 Yale on the University of New Mexico campus. All are welcomed to attend this presentation. The Myth: Immigrants come to the U.S. but don't really want to become citizens.
The Facts:
Most immigrants that come to the U. S. want to become citizens. This even knowing all the difficulties in passing all the requirements and backlogs that can delay the process for years. The majority of immigrants are not eligible to apply for citizenship until they have lived in the U.S. lawfully as a permanent resident status for five years. Also, they have to pass background checks, have proven that they have paid their taxes, are of good moral character, demonstrate knowledge of U.S. history and civics, and have the ability to understand, speak and write English. After all that, immigrants applying for naturalization have to pay a fee, which has increased by almost 70% in 2007. This has made it much more difficult for low-income immigrants to reach their dream of becoming Americans.
Even with all these obstacles the data from a U.S. census done by Pew Hispanic Center shows immigrants that received their citizenship rose slightly over 50 percent in 2005. Also, in 2007 during a small duration of time in that year, naturalization applications went up well over 300% compared to the previous year. The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Director, Emilio Gonzalez, stated that this increase was "unprecedented in the history of immigration services in our nation in his testimony to Congress.

La mayoría de los inmigrantes que vienen a los EE.UU. quieren convertirse en ciudadanos. Esto aún sabiendo todas las dificultades de paso, todos los requisitos y los retrasos que pueden retrasar el proceso durante años. La mayoría de los inmigrantes no son elegibles para solicitar la ciudadanía hasta que hayan vivido en los EE.UU. legalmente como una condición de residente permanente por cinco años.
