America is the land of immigrants. New York City would never have become a global economic leader if w e hadn't also have become a world leader in immigration as well. Ellis Island was the pathway for immigrants coming to America to realize the American dream. Most of them just wanted to work hard and give their children a better life than what they had. Very little has changed in over 100 years. Almost 40 percent of New Yorkers are immigrants, and they are an integral part of our economy by creating jobs. Nearly 50 percent of all companies in New York City are owned by immigrants. But businesses like every business in the United States are finding it more difficult to hire the employees they need to be competitive in the global workforce. Our immigration system is broken, and unless we do something about fixing it, our economy will continue to remain stagnant while other countries continue to entice some of the most talented people from around the world. Take for example that we currently invite the best and brightest students to study at our colleges and universities. A lot of the time we help pay for their schooling, then after they have received their degrees, we kicked them out of the country. Other countries from around the globe, swoop down and snatch these talented young people. These are the next generation of inventors and innovators and we toss them to the curb like our trash. The only ones we are hurting are ourselves. If the United States is going to be an economic leader, we cannot have such a dysfunctional immigration system that helps train and develop some of the best and brightest minds from around the world and then discard them to other nations.

Yesterday, with sweeping bipartisan support the Senate committee which had been debating sweeping comprehensive immigration reform legislation was approved last night. The vote was 13 to 5 to bring the Gang of Eight's amended comprehensive immigration reform package to the floor. The bipartisan committee agreed to support sweeping immigration reform which also allows a pathway to citizenship for the estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants along with increasing border security while fixing our countrys broken immigration system. The vote was put before the committee after five days of debate, where the committee heard and contemplated a number of amendments to the Gang of Eight's comprehensive immigration reform bill. Their immigration bill survived the committee and kept the main essence of the bill intact with solidarity and increased supporters to the bill by killing any proposed changes that would have removed key provisions such as a pathway to citizenship or introduced so-called “poison pills” that would have greatly harmed any chances for the bill to be passed on the Senate floor.

Supporters of the Senates immigration legislation are admitting to small changes in public while fighting over larger sweeping changes behind closed doors earlier this week. The Senates immigration reform bill is moving forward and is expected to receive Judiciary Committee approval in the next day or so. One item that is being debated is a requirement for foreigners to get fingerprinted when they go out of the United States. Another item that legislators found agreement on was to make immigrant’s third drunk driving conviction a deportable offence in certain cases. In a side note, Senators have shown their optimism that an agreement is in sight in regards to a very hard and complex issue over proposed changes to a section of the legislation relating to H-1B high skilled visas. Currently, the bill would increase the cap from 65,000 annually to 110,000. Also there is the possibility that this cap could be increased to 180,000. The foundation for the comprehensive immigration reform bill, would allow an opportunity of United States citizenship to millions of undocumented immigrants now residing in the United States. This bill would make a new visa program for low-skilled workers along with allowing a nice increase in the number of high-tech visas. Conservatives are asking for new measures to reduce future unlawful immigration.

Recently a federal district court announced that Arizona has "no rational basis" under the law to deny drivers’ licenses to young immigrants authorized to live and work in the United States under the federal government’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Those were mighty words coming from the judge but not much punch behind it because it he did not approve a preliminary injunction against the policy, which was put into place last year by an executive order from Arizona Governor Jan Brewer. The young immigrants, who were brought into the United States before their 16th birthday are known as DREAMers. Brewers order was was being fought by a number of civil rights groups on behalf of the Arizona Dream Act Coalition. That group is an immigrant youth-led organization, along with five individual immigrants who were brought to the United States as children. The coalition was disappointed with the judges ruling and said this: “This is an important ruling for Arizona’s DREAMers, and everyone who seeks justice, but we respectfully disagree with the court’s decision not to immediately block this harmful policy," said Jenny Chang Newell with the ACLU Immigrants' Rights Project. " It keeps young immigrants from contributing to their communities, to the state and to the nation. We intend to vigorously pursue justice for our plaintiffs so that this policy is blocked as soon as possible." We need to keep close eye on this development.

Members in the House have be in fierce negotiations the last several months over comprehensive immigration reform. Now a bipartisan group of legislators has come to an "agreement in principle" on immigration reform. This coming from Representative Mario Diaz-Balart of Florida, who is is one of the Republican members in the bipartisan group. A Democratic aide who has been in strict contact with the discussions also backed up Rep. Diaz-Balart announcement in regards that all the members in the group signed on and that both parties "will now run the whole package past their respective leadership and colleagues." They will also focus on formally introducing legislation at the beginning of June. Diaz-Balart would not go into details about their current discussions regarding immigration reform but he did say, "there's going to be a lot of differences in a lot of areas," from a bipartisan measure working its way through the Senate. The four Democrats are Reps. Xavier Becerra and Zoe Lofgren, both of California, Rep. Luis Gutierrez of Illinois, and Rep. John Yarmuth of Kentucky. The four Republican members of the House group include Diaz-Balart, Rep. Raul Labrador of Idaho, and Rep. John Carter and Rep. Sam Johnson, both of Texas. Members of the GOP had told reporters yesterday that the last issue to be resolved was to decide if the 11 million undocumented immigrants currently residing in the country would be allowed to receive government health care benefits. No one knows yet if or how the group came to a decision on the issue.

As American legislators bicker about the possible negative economic effects of immigration in our nation, they should be taking a quick history lesson on just a few of the very successful companies that have been built in the United States. Yes our esteemed colleagues in Congress would learn that a huge number of U.S. Companies, which are the most profitable companies, were built by people who were not born in the United States. Another interesting fact they would learn is that immigrant-founded Fortune 500 companies employed over 3.5 million employees across the globe in 2011. Immigrants were also responsible for nearly $2 trillion in revenues in 2010, according to the Partnership For A New American Economy. These results and job creating know-how is not just some fluke in just one or two companies. Last year a report was done on immigrants as a group and it was found that they were twice as likely to start a business venture then an American born citizen. Also, currently 1 in 10 American workers are employed by immigrant run businesses. Here are a few companies started by immigrants that you may possibly recognize:

Earlier this week Republicans sitting on the Senate Judiciary Committee rejected Senator Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) attempts to reduce the number of immigrants who could come to the United States. The amendment was thoroughly rejected by a vote of 1-17. To show how bad of an idea this was even Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas), who is a huge enemy of the Senate's comprehensive immigration reform bill, opposed the amendment. He said of the amendment that it went against American values as a nation of immigrants by saying, "I think as a nation, we need to remain a nation that doesn't just welcome but that celebrates legal immigrants." The gang of eight's resolve with all the amendments that are being thrown at it is remarkable, they are sticking together so that there comprehensive immigration reform bill will not fail. What is also remarkable is that the bipartisan gang of eight has almost voted identically on all amendments before their immigration bill.

Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) announced earlier this week that he would not back his own immigration reform bill if the Judiciary Committee members allowed lesbian/gay/bisexual/trans-gender (LGBT) provisions into the Senate's comprehensive immigration reform bill. The Gang of Eight, a bipartisan group of senators who put together comprehensive immigration legislation never addressed the issues faced by binational same-sex couples.Under the Defense of Marriage Act they are not allowed to petition for green cards for their foreign national partners. Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), chairman of the Judiciary Committee, brought forth amendments to the Senate's immigration bill that would allow same-sex couples the same treatment as heterosexual couples enjoy under current immigration law. Other Republicans appear to take the stand of Graham in regards to their homophobic attitudes. It is hard to believe in this day and age that people still think it is acceptable to hate another group of people because they are different from themselves. Hatred and bigotry is still hatred and bigotry no matter what justification you try and put on it. What is sadder yet is that these people try to use religion to hide behind their own faults and to try and clear their own conscience of their hateful ways.
