Q: What happens after my immigrant petition is authorized?

A: The petition will go to the National Visa Center in Portsmouth, NH. There it will be processed  at the appropriate time.

Q: What happens if my case is not up to date? Can the National Visa Center help accelerate my visa processing if it is an emergency?

A: Unfortunately no, the National Visa Center is not able to process non-current cases. It is able to rush threw cases that are current for life and death situations.

Q: Will I have to pay any fees to get my immigrant visa processed?

A: Yes, the National Visa Center will mail you a itemized bill for the immigrant visa processing fee. They will also mail an Affidavit of Support itemized bill for the processing fee to your sponsor. The reason they send an Affidavit of Support is to make certain that the foreign applicant has the means to be able to support themselves monotarily so that they will not be a burdon on the government for the basic necessities of life.

Q: Who needs to get an Affidavit of Support?

A: Typically anyone who applies for a family-based immigrant visa will need an Affidavit of Support. Now if a family member has filed an employment-based visa for you or controls 5 percent or more of a company that filed the petition, it is mandatory that you get an Affidavit of Support.

______________________________________________________________
Q: Is it mandatory to be interviewed to get an immigrant visa?

A: Yes you will be required to be interviewed and will be scheduled by an officer at a US Embassy or US Consulate. They can assist you in letting you know of any documents that are required for the interview.
