Temporary Protected Status Extended for Honduras

The Department of Homeland Security has extended Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Honduras an additional 18 months.

November 3, 2011

Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano has recently extended Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Hondurans nationals that are eligible. The amount of time that eligible Hondurans will receive is an additional 18 months which will begin on January 6, 2012, and end on July 5, 2013.

Why was the extension needed?

The Department of State (DOS) has continually been monitoring the situation in Honduras and has determined that an 18 month extension was warranted because of the conditions that still reside in the country because of Hurricane Mitch. The country is still suffering from extreme hardships in that country for living conditions. Hurricane Mitch which caused thousands in loss of life and even more that were injured. It was estimated that anywhere from 80,000 to 200,000 homes were destroyed or severely damaged by the hurricane. With the total destruction of the physical buildings and destruction of the country's infrastructure makes this country still very unstable and vulnerable. The DOS reported that the Honduras government and its people are still very dependant on International assistance, and recovery because of Hurricane Mitch is still not complete.
