Temporary Protected Status Extended for Nicaragua
The Department of Homeland Security has extended Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Nicaragua an additional 18 months.
November 3, 2011
Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano has recently extended Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Nicaragua nationals that are eligible. The amount of time that eligible Nicaraguans will receive is an additional 18 months which will begin on January 6, 2012, and end on July 5, 2013.
Why was the extension needed?
The Department of State (DOS) has continually been monitoring the situation in Nicaragua and has determined that an 18 month extension was warranted because of the conditions that are still present in Nicaragua because of Hurricane Mitch. This country has been devastated by the hurricane and still trying to recover from the extreme hardships in that country that still exists for its residents living conditions. Hurricane Mitch which had extremely heavy rainfall caused excessive flooding in the country. It caused two million to be directly affected by the hurricane. The estimated total damage caused by Mitch was $1.5 billion in USD. Nicaragua still has not fully recovered from the devastation caused by Hurricane Mitch. The most damaged areas are the North mountain region of Nicaragua, which is an isolated by the Atlantic ocean. It still remains to be one of the poorest regions and under developed areas of the country. Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere with Nicaragua a close second. The country is still struggling to regain long term recovery and depends on International relief for its citizens.
